Milestone for European Inland Navigation

Efforts to transform European inland waterway transport reached a milestone with the successful completion of the H2020 project IW-NET, which was coordinated by the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL). Inland navigation as an environmentally friendly freight transport alternative faces challenges such as low public awareness, infrastructural bottlenecks and the increasing age of the fleet. The project addressed these through innovative technologies, a focus on digitalization, integration into transport chains, optimized waterway infrastructure management and the introduction of environmentally friendly shipping technologies. The aim was to create a holistic perspective for more efficient, environmentally friendly inland shipping.

Intelligent Planning and Control of Car Handling at Ports

Approximately 70,000 car parking spaces, around 1,000 car ships every year, plus thousands of car trains and trucks: with 1.7 million cars handled annually (2022), the BLG AutoTerminal Bremerhaven is one of the largest in the world. This is precisely where the tests in the "Isabella" and "Isabella 2.0" research projects took place. They dealt with the process planning and control of automobile handling in ports with the help of mathematical optimization, simulation and artificial intelligence (AI). Isabella 2.0" has now also been successfully completed. The partners involved were BLG LOGISTICS, 28Apps Software (Bremen) and BIBA.

DataNord: A Data Competence Center for the Bremen Region

In cooperation within the U Bremen Research Alliance and with other partners, the University of Bremen is establishing a data competence center for the entire region. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding the establishment of the center with over 3.5 million euros.
“Our vision is to extend Bremen’s strong expertise in the field of data science to a data competence center with a lighthouse character, which can serve as a model for other regions in Germany,” says the project leader at the University of Bremen, Professor Rolf Drechsler, who is one of three spokespeople for the project. The aim of DataNord is to create a place for data science learning, research and networking for researchers in the region, regardless of institutional or disciplinary boundaries.

ISL Study Sheds Light on the Potential of Containerised Hydrogen Transports

In view of the energy transition and the gradual shutdown of coal and nuclear power plants, it is ecologically and economically necessary to become less dependent on fossil fuels. Blue and green hydrogen offer a promising solution for various applications. Germany is likely to import green hydrogen, for which transportation by ship is an important alternative. Containerized hydrogen enables small producers to participate in the market worldwide. Bremerhaven with its container terminals can provide a structure for import. This study evaluates various concepts for importing hydrogen in containers in terms of feasibility and contribution to the energy transition.

AI-Based Analysis in Manual Assembly

The overall objective of the cooperation project ErgoKI (acquisition and AI-based analysis of ergonomics data in manual assembly using sensors close to the body and machine vision methods) is the development of a system for the acquisition and AI-based analysis of ergonomics data in manual assembly using sensors close to the body and machine vision methods. Based on various sensors and a data layer to be developed, a process modeling is carried out which enables the analysis with regard to ergonomics and productivity in assembly. The key figures are displayed in a user-friendly dashboard and suggestions for improvement are automatically issued. The overall system is developed on the basis of a detailed requirements analysis. BIBA - Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik is the project partner and coordinator.

Hybrid Approach Helps to Localize Objects

The aim of the project, in which the BIBA - Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik was involved, was to develop an inexpensive and easy-to-integrate solution for the indoor localization of objects. The hybrid approach that was pursued is based on established protocols such as Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and WiFi RTT (Round-Trip-Time), which were combined in a new way via a mobile, hybrid end device. As part of the project, real-time-based approaches to data management were implemented on edge computing platforms and supplemented with user-friendly user interfaces for industrial use.

Improving Quality Through the Use of Active Nets

In the recently launched project with BIBA participation, research is being conducted into the development of methods and procedures for the analysis and prediction of system behavior, for example to identify the causes of quality deviations and suggest quality measures. To this end, the interdependencies are first modeled qualitatively and then quantitatively by means of so-called effect networks, whereby data standards of the administration shell and OPC-UA are used as a basis in order to establish compatibility and direct system integration into the digital twin.

Energy Efficiency in Compound Feed Production

There are many upstream and downstream processes and procedures in the value chain of compound feed production that generate valuable information. These processes are mainly carried out by other companies along the value chain. The aim of the MexD project (energy-efficient compound feed production through the use of external data sources), in which the BIBA - Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik is involved, is to increase efficiency in production and in other areas of the value chain by linking the individual steps, creating a database with external and internal company data as a basis for AI modelling and a holistic view of the optimization goals along the value chain.

For more Ergonomics and Productivity in Assembly

The aim of the Adapt2Mount cooperation project, in which the BIBA - Bremer Institut für Produktion und Logistik is involved, is to develop an adaptive assembly system with which individualized ergonomic improvements and productivity increases can be achieved for the first time at industrial assembly workstations in shift operation or with changing assemblies. Based on the data analysis of a multimodal wearable and camera-based sensor system, both direct in-process ergonomic optimizations of the assembly station and the planning of process improvements are carried out.

Development of a Drone System for Automatic Stocktaking

In the project with BIBA participation, a drone system was developed for automatic stocktaking and quality control of pallet contents in block warehouses. A helium-based lighter-than-air drone (LaL) was selected as the drone platform and a particularly lightweight sensor system was developed. This enables 360° environmental detection, the recognition of relevant objects (pallets, people, pallet stacks) and supports control by recording flight altitude, acceleration and orientation. Deep learning-based algorithms for object detection were implemented and validated for the detection of relevant objects and for quality inspection.

Micro Digital Twins for Optimizing the Operation and Service Life of Wind Farms

The challenge in using cloud technologies and distributed edge computing for a viable IoT platform lies in making high-resolution data available and processing it and linking it with AI models. Traditional IoT platforms and structures, such as those already used in the wind energy sector, cannot adequately map the dynamics of the actual life cycle of complex product systems such as wind turbines. In the STRATUS project (development and operational use of micro digital twins to optimize the operation and service life of wind farms through predictive data analysis), a flexible, decentralized concept for so-called "micro digital twins" (MDTs) was therefore developed and implemented together with the joint partner Nordex.

Energy Efficiency and Pizza - How Do They Go Together?

Manufacturing companies often ask themselves how they can meet the megatrends of digitalization and sustainability. Is it possible to combine both approaches? We explored this question - together with interested companies - in the workshop "Intelligent microgrids for an energy self-sufficient company" on December 5, 2023 at BIBA. In our learning factory, the guests had the opportunity to produce their own energy self-sufficient pizza. This illustrative and tasty example was used to demonstrate technologies, methods and concepts that contribute to a better assessment of the current situation in the company from an energy perspective.
